Michael Pearce, another Kansas Notable book author, wrote an article on us for the Wichita Eagle. Read it here: Book takes a fresh look at Kansas hiking, biking | The Wichita Eagle.
Check out this article from the Topeka Capital-Journal online about the 2016 Kansas Notable Books, and they got in touch for a quote – read here: Kansas Notable Books list announced by State Library of Kansas | CJOnline.com.
Two days after National Trails Day, it is official. The Kansas Trail Guide is on the 2016 Kansas Notable Book List! See the full list here.
And for more info on the list itself:
The Kansas Notable Books List is the annual recognition of 15 outstanding titles by Kansas authors or about Kansas. It is the only honor for Kansas books by Kansans, highlighting our lively contemporary writing community and encouraging readers to enjoy some of the best writing of the authors among us.

This Friday, Jonathan will be showing off just how amazing Kansas trails can be if you give them a chance. We don’t pretend that we’re the high mountain peaks of Colorado, but the stillness and vastness of the prairie and the trails winding through the woodlands can prove to be just as impressive (if in a more subtle way) and infinitely more accessible to those living in the Sunflower State.
We’ve heard over and over again how people think there’s nothing to do in Kansas in terms of trails and that it’s just flat interstate. However, our experiences and our book prove otherwise.
The presentation will be at the Great Plains Nature Center from 7 to 8:30. It’s a part of their author’s night – the author of Kansas Wildflower and Weeds will be there as well – another University Press of Kansas publication. It will be a great night and a great opportunity to be inspired by the landscapes of Kansas.

We were extraordinarily blessed to work with some talented photographers to help make the book as amazing as it is. You can find their work in the pages of the Kansas Trail Guide as well as on their websites – extraordinary talent and a testament to the beauty of the midwest! And many of them have prints you can order.

One of my favorites is the Ghost of the Plains and Spring Prairie Sunset
Love his waterfall images
He posts updates on his travels and has sales of photos at his blog
Unique shot at Clinton Lake – Fire and Ice Sunset
Great storm photo
Along with landscape and nature shots, he’s got some nice city and architecture images.
Who doesn’t love an up close butterfly photo?
More so a cyclist than a photographer, but a constantly updated blog and good insight into Kansas biking along with some fun photos along the way.
And of course, thanks to our dad for a lot of his great photos too!
We’ve been hard at work getting some events organized for the summer so you’ll be able to ask us any questions about the book or about Kansas trails and even get your book signed!
Here’s our schedule:
The morning of Saturday, July 11 at The Pathfinder (304 Poyntz) in Manhattan, KS.
7pm on Tuesday, July 14 at the Salina Public Library (301 W Elm Street) in Salina, KS.
5-9pm on Thursday, July 16 at Bookends (123 N Main Street) in Hutchinson – a part of the Third Thursday
1:00pm on Saturday, July 18 at Watermark Books (4701 E Douglas) in Wichita
6:30-8pm on Monday, July 20 at REI (6281 W 135th Street) in Overland Park – sign up for that event here, only a few spots left!
We’ve reached out to others to talk to them about what they find special about Kansas and how they work on building trails, so it was unexpected and awesome to be contacted by KCUR Central Standard 89.3 FM for an interview about Kansas trails and the Kansas trail guidebook.
I (Kristin) got a little overexcited and managed to confuse the Oregon Trail with the Santa Fe Trail – you wouldn’t be going through the Cimarron National Grassland if you were on the Oregon Trail, unless you were lost. Other than that, I think it went pretty well! Here’s a link where you can listen to the interview and read about some of our personal favorite trails and some new trails that we’d recommend: http://kcur.org/post/best-kansas-trails-biking-hiking-and-horseback-riding
We weren’t sure we’d be able to get copies of the book available at the Kansas Sampler Festival, but now we know. We’ve got the copies and we’re ready to help you get out and explore.
You’ll be one of the first to get a copy of the Kansas Trail Guide if you stop by our booth at the Kansas Sampler Festival in Wamego City Park on May 2 and 3. You can also pick up a sticker or a bookmark along with some of our favorite trail snack recipes.
Total cost of the book including tax will be $24.95. If we run out, we’ll be able to set up an order for you and the book should get to you within a week.
We’ll be in Kansas Products Tent #1 on the west side.
The Kansas Sampler Foundation is all about building up and supporting Kansas. “Our mission is to preserve, sustain, and grow rural culture by educating Kansans about Kansas and by networking and supporting rural communities. The cause is to keep every town viable that shows the will and spirit to help itself.”
Well, barring a miracle, you won’t be able to get an actual book in hand (shipping delays from dock worker strikes), but you will be able to see a copy and get your order in so you’ll be one of the first ones to read and use Kansas Trail Guide: The Best Hiking, Biking, and Riding in the Sunflower State
You’ll get free shipping and it should ship in the second week of May! Stop by the Kansas Sampler Festival to place your order and check out the book. You’ll also be able to snag some swag – our favorite granola recipes, bookmarks, and stickers – and we can give you recommendations on where to hike, bike, or ride depending on your fitness level, interest, and where you live.
We’ll be in Kansas Products Tent #1 on the west side and it’s May 2 and 3, 2015 in Wamego City Park.
They’ll also have other Kansas products to buy and awesome food to try along with historic performers, children’s activities, and more.
See you there!
